New research suggests that dolphins call each other by name when separated or lost. Apart from humans, dolphins are the only other species to do this, the only difference being of course, that dolphins use different whistle sounds to call their counterparts. This fascinating research doesn’t stop there, according to The Royal Society B; bottle-nose dolphins in particular have specific whistles for each dolphin, even referring to themselves by name.

Stephanie King of the University of st. Andrews Sea Mammal Research Unit, researched this phenomenon on bottle-nose dolphins at Sarasota Bay, Florida.

“A dolphin emits its signature whistle to broadcast its identity and announce its presence, allowing animals to identify one another over large distances and for animals to recognize one another and to join up with each other,” King explained. “Dolphin whistles can be detected up to 20 km away (12.4 miles) depending on water depth and whistle frequency.”

Phytoplankton Seen From Space

This image captured on May 4th shows a bloom of the microscopic phytoplankton in the Bay of Biscay. Triggered by two things: food which comes in the form of nutrient-rich freshwater form the land, and sunlight which increases this season. Despite providing an excellent source of nutrients for all aquatic life, phytoplankton can also starve the water of oxygen which is detrimental to ocean life. NASA’s Terra and Aqua satellites captured this image using their Moderate Resolution Imaging.

2013 Summit of Caribbean Leaders.

Heads of government, CEOs and conservation leaders recently joined up to protect and preserve the lands and waters of the Caribbean. According to Richard Branson, their goal is to conserve ‘at least 20% of near-shore marine/coastal ecosystems by 2020 in the Caribbean.’

The event will launch the second phase of the Caribbean Challenge Initiative (CCI), the largest coordinated, multi-national conservation initiative in the region. During phase one of the CCI, government officials made two commitments for nature:

To effectively conserve at least 20% of their near-shore marine/ coastal environment by 2020.

To put in place a new sustainable finance architecture that will generate long-term funding for the marine and coastal environment.

Encouraging progress has since been made, including the establishment of the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund, and U.S. financial commitments of $55 million.

The second phase of the Carribean Challege Initiave will more actively engage the private sector, the general public and additional countries and territories. New conservation plans and funding commitments will be announced. In addition, a consumer engagement initiative called Defend Paradise will be launched.

The event is being co-hosted by Prime Minister Tillman Thomas of Grenada, Premier Orlando Smith of the British Virgin Islands and Sir Richard Branson, founder and CEO of Virgin Group.

Hands Across The Sand- Miami 2013

Weekend beach-goers and environmental activists joined hands along Miami Beach to take a stand against the U.S. dependence on oil and to promote clean energy resources.

The Hands Across The Sand movement started in Florida in 2010, when 10,000 residents across 90 beaches linked arms to protest the efforts by the Florida Legislature and Congress to lift the ban on oil drilling off the shores of Florida.

This weekends stand was the largest gathering in the history of Florida to prevent oil drilling on Florida’s shores.

Spotted in Brighton, UK: WhaleFest 2014
