‘Armageddon’ was a 1998 blockbuster starring Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck, directed by Michael Bay. When an asteroid, large enough to end all life on Earth, is found to be hurtling towards us, the government’s solution is to send a bend of deep-sea drillers into space to intercept it and divert its path. After many obstacles are overcome they manage to successfully drill to the asteroids core and detonate a nuclear warhead, sending two halves of the asteroid veering of course and preserving our planet.
In reality, however, though deep-sea drillers are providing societies with a necessary commodity, the result has sometimes caused many crises within our ocean environment. On April 20th 2010, a BP oilrig in the Gulf of Mexico suffered a catastrophic disaster leading to the largest oil slick in American history being produced. Obviously, the worst affected by this tragedy is the marine life and the ocean itself.
