‘Namor, The Sub-Mariner’ is the king of Atlantis and ruler of the world’s oceans. Created in 1939 by Bill Everett, back when Marvel was known as Timely Comics, he made his first appearance in ‘Marvel Comics #1’. He is an Atlantean/ human, mutant hybrid; also known as ‘homo mermanus’ in the Marvel universe, suggesting a possible mermaid connection. He posses many amphibious qualities and other super human abilities, such as increased strength and durability.
Occasionally towing the line between hero and villain, his motivations have always remained the same, to fight for the protection of the oceans. On his better days he has served with ‘Captain America’ against Nazi’s, wooed ‘Sue Storm’ of the ‘Fantastic Four’ and, most recently, joined the ranks of the ‘X-Men’ to help protect the endangered mutant species and the diminishing underwater Atlantean Empire.
Conversely, he has held many vendettas against the surface dwellers for many atrocities committed against sea life, such as pollution and the destruction of his underwater environment.
