‘Great Pacific’, to be released on 7th November by Image Comics, is written by Joe Harris, with art from Martin Morazzo. The series follows a 21-year-old ‘Chas Worthington’ who is set to inherit a controlling interest in his deceased fathers oil empire. Chas, however, abandons his familial responsibility and the wealth that comes with it to tackle one of the bigger (literally) problems facing our oceans.

Amidst the Pacific Ocean lies one of the largest areas of pollution, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, or the Pacific Trash Vortex. This is an area of sea where plastics, refuse and debris have become trapped by currents and formed together by the North Pacific Gyre. The mass has been estimated to be twice the size of Texas in its current state.

Joe Harris has taken this very real ocean crisis and is creating a science fiction/ environmental/ political action series where ‘Chas Worthington’ finds himself tackling the problem himself and, amongst the ‘islands’ mutated wildlife, announces it as a de-facto nation of the world with many unexpected twists and turns to look forward to.

The Trash Vortex is not limited to only the North Pacific, others can be found in oceans across the world.  Support groups like @NOAAdebris and @TEDxGP2 who are raising awareness and striving to end this crisis in our oceans.
